“The Dark Well”
Deep within the well below,
Where the dark is thick and dead,
Evil calls to those who know
All the evil things they’ve said.
Sinners stop along the track,
Drawn to hear the voice below,
Staring down into the black
Where the quiet waters glow.
Leaning past the well’s cold rim,
One man flips a coin to hear,
Reaching deep into the dim,
Pressing in to get too near.
Slick wet stone and sudden fall,
Swallowed by the icy black,
Nothing left to hear at all,
And the water smooths right back.
